24TH STREET THEATRE

  THE PLAY
The Exception and The Rule was written in 1930. It is Bertolt Brecht’s last didactic piece, and without doubt his most complete. Following the tradition of didactic theatre, the intrigue is simple, in the style of Chinese works: the main actor announces “I am the businessman Karl Langmann.” His future and fortune depend upon the expedition he leads through the Jahi desert, in far-away Mongolia, hoping to discover oil deposits. He has hired a local guide and porter. Little by little, as this solitary voyage ensues, fear grips the merchant, for it seems logical to him that his two employees, miserable and poorly paid, should want to kill him.

  THE COMPANY
TeatroSinParedes was founded in Mexico in 2001. Through various approaches, such as the clown or “forum theatre” style, the company works to create performances that are directly related to the audience and which gives each audience member an active role. This allows them to build a bridge towards what can be considered their scenic aesthetic: the fusion of theatre with comedy, aiming to propose a specific scenic language, where comedy is in permanent contact with what Brecht called “the tragedy of the everyday.” The concept of “theatre without walls” communicates the company’s desire to open up theater’s doors, making it available to everyone so that it ceases to be the privilege of the few. The company pursues a theatre in which the walls that separate us from each other and from ourselves come crashing down. TeatroSinParedes has premiered A Man is a Man by B. Brecht (2001); The Struggle of Black and Dogs by B.M. Koltès (2003); The Obligatory Theatre by Karl Valentin (2006); as well as the forum theatre events He Who Said Yes; Does it Have to Be?; The Recipe; Towards the North and Family, I Hate You.
