THE PLAY
Once upon the time...
there was the kiwicha river, the country
of nothing and
the monkey, starts with the intervention
of two storytellers: one hails from the
Andes and the other from the Amazon.
Both dance and communicate with drums,
winds and voices, initiating a ritual
that guides you through the gates to
the
magic world of their narration. This
performance stages fables rescued from
the
oral traditions of the Shipibo-Conibo
and Aguaruna nations, Andean legends,
and
stories by Peruvian authors, all animated
with song, dance and theatricality based
on the research of various and rich national
traditions carried out by Yuyachkani
for more than three decades.

THE COMPANY
Yuyachkani
Cultural Group. Yuyachkani is a quechua
word that means “I am
thinking, I am remembering.” Since
1971 the group has created 25 shows that
reveal its intention of rethinking Peru
in terms of theater. Their staging draws
from
dance, music, traditions, masks, and
many other elements of the Peruvian culture.
Considered one of the preeminent troupes
of Latin American theater, Yuyachkani
has continuously toured many international
theater festivals. This company first
appeared in Los Angeles during FITLA
2002 with the play Please, Don’t
Play that
Waltz for Me and returned to L.A. during
FITLA 2004 with Antigone and The Wandering
Players. That time, Yuyachkani received
from FITLA the Dionisio Award of
Excellence as a recognition of its thirty-three
years of outstanding trajectory.
